Cross Stitch vs Embroidery: Which Kit Should You Choose?

Cross stitch and embroidery are both wonderful ways to create something beautiful with a needle and thread, but they are not quite the same. If you are wondering whether to buy a cross stitch kit or an embroidery kit, this guide explains the differences, the pros and cons of each, and how to choose the right kit for you.

What is cross stitch?

Cross stitch is a type of counted embroidery. You work small X-shaped stitches on an evenly woven fabric such as Aida, following a grid chart where each square is one stitch. Because every stitch sits in the grid, cross stitch is very structured and easy to learn, and it can produce incredibly detailed, almost painterly pictures. Browse our cross stitch kits to see what is possible.

What is embroidery?

"Embroidery" is the broad term for decorating fabric with thread. Free-style or surface embroidery uses lots of different stitches – satin stitch, stem stitch, French knots, chain stitch and more – worked freely over a design printed or drawn onto cotton or linen. It is usually stitched in an embroidery hoop and often has a more textured, hand-drawn look. Cross stitch is technically one form of embroidery, which is why many stitchers enjoy both.

Cross stitch vs embroidery at a glance

  • Fabric: cross stitch uses counted fabric like Aida or evenweave; embroidery usually uses plain cotton or linen.
  • Pattern: cross stitch follows a chart of symbols; embroidery follows lines printed on the fabric.
  • Stitches: cross stitch mainly uses one stitch (plus some half and back stitches); embroidery uses many different stitches.
  • Look: cross stitch is pixel-like and can be very detailed; embroidery is textured and free-flowing.
  • Learning curve: cross stitch is often the easiest for complete beginners because there is only one main stitch to learn.

Which kit should you choose?

Choose a cross stitch kit if…

You enjoy following clear instructions, love detailed pictures, or want a relaxing, repetitive project to unwind with. Start with our beginner cross stitch kits, or explore favourite brands like Luca-S, AVA and Letistitch.

Choose an embroidery kit if…

You want to try lots of different stitches, prefer a more artistic, textured finish, or like quick hoop-art projects for gifts and decorations. See our embroidery kits for ideas.

Can't decide?

Try both! Many cross stitch designs include back stitch and French knots, so you will naturally pick up embroidery skills as you go. Our mystery boxes are a fun way to discover new kits too.

Supplies you will need

Most of our kits are complete, but every stitcher benefits from a few good tools: sharp embroidery scissors, a comfortable frame or stand, spare needles, and quality threads such as Luca-S stranded cotton or DMC.
