Cross Stitch Supplies Checklist: Fabric, Threads, Needles & Hoops
Whether you are starting your very first project or restocking your stitching basket, having the right cross stitch supplies makes every project easier and more enjoyable. This checklist covers the essential tools and materials every cross stitcher and embroiderer needs – and what to look for when buying them in the UK.
1. Fabric: Aida, evenweave and canvas
Most cross stitch is worked on Aida fabric, which has a clear grid of holes. The "count" tells you how many stitches fit into one inch: 14-count is the classic beginner choice, while 16- and 18-count give finer, more detailed results. Evenweave and linen suit more experienced stitchers, and canvas is used for needlepoint and petit point. Shop our cross stitch fabric and canvas, including Zweigart fabrics.
2. Embroidery threads
Stranded cotton (mouline) is the standard thread for cross stitch. It comes in six strands that you separate – most designs on 14-count Aida use two strands for cross stitches and one for back stitch. Explore our Luca-S embroidery threads and use a mouline colour card to match shades accurately.
3. Needles
Cross stitch uses tapestry needles with a blunt tip that slips between the fabric threads without splitting them. Size 24 suits 14-count Aida and size 26 or 28 suits finer fabrics. Keep a few spares in our cross stitch and embroidery needles range, and store them safely in a needle tin box.
4. Hoops, frames and stands
A hoop or frame keeps your fabric taut so your stitches stay even. Small hoops are perfect for portable projects, while scroll frames and floor stands make large designs far more comfortable to work. See our embroidery hoops and frames and embroidery stands and frames.
5. Embroidery scissors
A small, sharp pair of embroidery scissors lets you trim threads close to the fabric neatly. Keep them just for thread so the blades stay sharp – browse our embroidery scissors.
6. Needle minders and little helpers
A magnetic needle minder holds your needle on the fabric when you pause, so it never goes missing. Other handy extras include pins, a seam ripper for fixing mistakes, tape measures and project pouches to keep everything together.
