Best Cross Stitch Kits for Beginners: How to Choose Your First Kit

Thinking about picking up a needle for the first time? Cross stitch is one of the most relaxing, rewarding crafts you can learn, and a good beginner cross stitch kit takes all the guesswork out of getting started. In this guide we explain what to look for in a first kit, which fabrics and designs are easiest, and share some of our favourite kits for new stitchers from our Beginner Cross Stitch Kits collection.

What comes in a cross stitch kit?

A complete counted cross stitch kit usually contains everything you need to finish the design: pre-cut Aida or evenweave fabric, sorted stranded cotton threads (floss), a needle and a printed chart or pattern. Some kits also include a thread organiser or even a hoop. Before you buy, it is worth checking the kit contents so you know whether you will need any extras such as an embroidery hoop or frame or a small pair of embroidery scissors.

How to choose your first cross stitch kit

1. Pick a lower fabric count

Aida fabric is woven in a grid of clearly visible holes. The "count" tells you how many stitches fit into one inch. A lower count such as 11 or 14 means bigger holes and bigger stitches, which is easier on the eyes. 16-count and 18-count Aida give finer detail but are best once you are confident.

2. Start small

A small or medium design lets you finish quickly and enjoy that first "I made this!" moment. Look at our petite cross stitch kits for compact projects you can complete in a few evenings.

3. Fewer colours, bolder shapes

Designs with a limited palette and clear blocks of colour are easier to follow on the chart. Avoid very large, photo-realistic designs with lots of half stitches and back stitching until you have a few projects behind you.

4. Choose a theme you love

You will spend hours with your project, so pick something that makes you smile: flowers, animals and birds, cosy interiors or seasonal Christmas cross stitch. Motivation is the secret to finishing!

Essential tips for your first project

  • Start in the middle. Fold your fabric in half both ways to find the centre and start from the centre of the chart. This keeps the design centred.
  • Use two strands. Most kits on 14 to 16-count Aida use two strands of thread for full cross stitches. Always check your chart key.
  • Keep your top stitches going the same way. This gives a neat, even finish.
  • Don't knot your thread. Secure the tail under your first few stitches instead, so the back stays flat.
  • Organise your threads. A thread organiser or our magnetic needle minders make stitching much more enjoyable.
